Nel film, un gruppo eterogeneo di scienziati, soldati ed esploratori si avventura nelle profondità di una mitica e sperduta isola del Pacifico, tanto pericolosa quanto affascinante. Al di là di ogni loro aspettativa, la squadra procede inconsapevole di entrare nel dominio del potente Kong, innescando la battaglia finale tra uomo e natura. La storia ruota attorno a un uomo (Hiddleston) in viaggio l’isola mitologica dopo che suo fratello – in cerca di un siero ritenuto capace di curare tutte le malattie – rimane bloccato lì. L’uomo si mette così a capo di una spedizione per salvare suo fratello con il rischio di imbattersi nelle creature che abitano l’isola.

L’ambientazione negli anni settanta allontana il film dal King Kong di Peter Jackson (ambientato negli anni trenta) e lo avvicina a quello del remake del 1976, che tuttavia all’epoca era “moderno”: in questo caso l’ambientazione sarà vintage.
